DAILY 5/ CAFE
In my classroom I run my Language arts block using the DAILY5/CAFE framework.
The Daily Five it is a structure that helps scholars develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.Assessing young readers involves more than determining a reading level and moving them onto the next. The CAFE Menu helps the scholars understand and master different strategies used by successful readers.
Daily 5 tasks include:
1. Read to self
2. Read to someone
3. Listen to reading
4. Work on writing
5. Word work
When scholars can read and write independently during these times, it allows the teacher the opportunity to work with small groups of scholars to teach and reinforce essential reading skills. Your child will be taught how to select “Good Fit Books,” and we will work to provide a large variety of reading materials for students, from all different genres and print types.
CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary, and the system includes goal-setting with scholars in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of scholars with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging scholar needs and fine tuning one on one conferring.
Having a strong language arts block is important because literacy is crucial to the success of the scholars in both their future career aspirations and their quality of life. It has an impact on their ability to participate in society and to understand important public issues. It provides the foundation upon which skills needed in life are built. Your donation will lead these students to success.
